Children who have problems acquiring language are at high risk for difficulty in learning to read and write. Literacy not only contributes to academic success, but also plays an important role in social interactions. This workshop will outline what literacy is as well as make connections between a child’s speech and language skills and the direct impact on literacy. Participants will learn the stages of literacy development, as well as strategies to support their child in developing strong literacy skills. The impact of phonological awareness skills on the development of reading and writing skills will also be discussed.
